What are my Legal Obligations Regarding GDPR?

Every business has an obligation to ensure that any document containing personally-identifiable data (e.g., name, address, payroll details, telephone number, email address) is securely stored and managed at all times, before being confidentially and responsibly destroyed. Under GDPR, any breach of this obligation can be punished with penalties up to 20 million euros or 4% of global turnover (whichever is greater).

It would be fair to assume therefore that most of the documents produced and recorded by a business will contain confidential information in some form, and as such, are subject to the tenets of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). With this in mind, they must be responsibly destroyed to prevent the confidential data pertaining to your customers, employees, patients or contacts falling into the wrong hands and leading to identity theft or other misuses of the data. You can find more information on GDPR (including how to keep your electronic data safe) on the Information Commissioners website.
